| February 2012 Welcome To Education for Health's first newsletter of 2012! It's great to know that we are well on the way to Spring and certainly here in Warwick so far, seem to have missed the extreme weather we saw last year and have daffodils in flower already! We are surrounded by technology in our daily lives and whilst for some of us this can be a constant challenge, it undoubtedly offers huge opportunities both in learning and patient care. In this newsletter we have lots of exciting news about innovations in learning technology which will benefit both our students and the patients they manage. Supporting quality care for patients remains our main priority and we include two stories about important work going on to raise standards in this area. Diabetes Watch and the new asthma panel both seek, in very different ways, to improve the quality of care that patients receive. Finally, the latest report from the Futures Forum together with the government's response, provides some welcome support for the future of high quality education and training. I hope you enjoy the newsletter; we would love to hear your feedback on the information we have given you and any ideas you have that could help us to improve Taking Action, so please do get in touch. Diabetes watch - raising standards in diabetes care Diabetes UK has recently launched an initiative to remind patients of the standard of care they should receive if they have diabetes. Diabetes Watch aims to make providers accountable for the quality of care provided for people with diabetes. Their latest tool is a publication called ‘Diabetes – what care you should receive’ and is based on the care standards set out by NICE and NHS Quality Improvement. The document consists of a patient checklist of 15 key points which should be addressed in order to provide a good standard of diabetes care. | Highlights Taking action Educating people Transforming lives Signpost of web news Get involved Depression in a COPD patient - new case study The REAL website (Respiratory Education and Learning Clinic) is a free online educational resource, launched by Education for Health, for healthcare professionals who have an interest in respiratory care that utilises elements of eLearning to create interactive and realistic case studies to assist you in managing your consultations better. Quality of life issues are extremely important in long term conditions. Depression is known to be more common in people with long term conditions but may go undiagnosed. We are therefore pleased to add this important case study to our REAL website. Help your patients take control of their asthma with a new app With the use of mobile smart phones and apps increasingly becoming a part of everyday life, we have welcomed the launch of MyAsthma app. This app aims to empower asthma patients, allowing them to better understand their condition and address the personal barriers they face in managing their asthma. This app can generate tailored messages and will facilitate more informed dialogue between patients and healthcare professionals. "MyAsthma app is a really exciting step towards better management of asthma and towards improving quality of life for patients who live with this condition" said Monica Fletcher, Chief Executive at Education for Health. New panel seeks to reduce asthma deaths We're supporting a new initiative being led by the Royal College of Physicians. As part of the on-going struggle to manage asthma a panel is being assembled which will assess each and every asthma death in the UK over a 12 month period beginning 1st February 2012. Our chief Executive Monica Fletcher commented: "We are proud to support this important initiative. The evidence that this panel will generate, through the application of rigour, experience and systematic analysis, will be vital to all of our continuing work to tackle asthma". "Future Forum's recommendations are hugely exciting and reflect many of the beliefs we have held for many years" As part of its on-going NHS consultation, the government commissioned the NHS Future Forum, an independent body of health experts, to report on education and training, information and public health. Earlier ths week the government accepted the Future Forum's recommendations. Monica Fletcher, Education for Health's Chief Executive, said today of the report: "For us as a health education charity the recommendations are hugely exciting and reflect many of the beliefs we have held for many years. Two points in particular represent, to us, a considerable step forward". Upcoming event we're supporting and attending RCN Education Forum Conference and Exhibition, Harrogate This conference, which runs from 23-24th February celebrates best practice and brings together all those working and interested in education and research.
